When you login, the main page doesn't show you as logged in. This is because some pages are cached by Varnish, and the cookies are ignored, to make the caching actually worthwhile. If there's a way to selectively not cache that region of the display that could work. Otherwise perhaps it's best simply to remove the profile image / login from the menubar?
